Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned the art of being a good instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get interested in production for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one of the jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
